Similar to rabies, another prevalent disease is distemper. Some of you dog owners may recognize this from vet appointments. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So first question - what is distemper? It is a viral disease that affects mammals such as dogs, coyotes, foxes, pandas, wolves, ferrets, skunks, raccoons, large cats, etc. Distemper can be transmitted through direct contact, a pregnant animal's placenta, and an airborne virus. An infected animal's cough, sneeze, etc., release aerosol droplets into the environment, infecting nearby animals and surfaces. Meaning the only true way to protect your furry friends is to vaccinate!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Unlike rabies, distemper can not be transmitted to humans. But, distemper is one of the worst situations a rehabber can go through; it can quickly spread, killing a colony of animals such as raccoons and any everyday housepet that may come in contact with these animals at risk. This is why proper channels for wildlife rehabilitation must always be taken and never gone into it without all the needed information and proper enclosures. This wildlife can be vaccinated just like dogs, but sometimes you are too late and have to take all needed precautions. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you come in contact with an animal showing symptoms, call the DNR and your local rehabilitation facility right away so they can properly deal with the situation.
